We're back with another video, this time we're recreating the special effects makeup done on your fav character in your fav show 13 Reasons Why.

So as I said in the video, there has been a huge amount of comments on Clay's cut across his forehead, saying that it was actually so bad it took people's attention away from the actual show!
I decided to have a little say about it myself as well as doing a makeup tutorial on how I would have done it myself.

Now, I'm not here to be an ass about someone else's work, we are all artists and do things our own ways and the ways that just are best for us.

I see where the viewers were coming from and that's all I'm going to say, I'm not about the hater life.

ANYWAY!

Since the video was so short, there was barely any time for some thorough explanation of the steps. So like always I will do it here.

The first step before applying wax on the skin, is applying witch hazel on the skin to get rid of any oil that could potentially have the wax slip and slide or simply fall off.

When that's done apply spirit gum onto the skin, MAKE SURE to patch test, some people have really bad allergic reactions to spirit gum, ironically, including myself...
Spirit gum is a contact adhesive so poke it a bit with your brush or cotton bud and it will get tacky.
Then just apply your bit of wax and start blending it. Remember to apply small amounts of wax, it's better to add it on later than to take excess off ruining the blend.

To make your life a bit easier, coat your spatula or fingers with vaseline, then when you're done blending smooth out the surface of the wax with a bit of vaseline on your finger. 'Cut' the wax to create the cut. Powder and apply sealer.

Do this for all five cuts. Let the sealer dry, then powder again.

Now the fun part is creating the bruises and skin irritation.
So since clay just got the cut, it should be a bit irritated and swollen, you can achieve this using minimal amounts of a one shade darker than your skin tone, pink, red and tiny little bits of burgundy.
Using a small fluffy brush add the first shade, follow by pink then red and then burgundy around the edges of the cut.
Fill the inside of the cut with some red in the centre and dark red on the edges, then add some HD blood or even better if you have wound filler! But don't let the blood drip yet, just keep it sitting inside the cut for now.

Do this around all the cuts as they're still fresh, follow the way I do it in the video.

This will be your cleaned up Clay after his run in with Bryce.

Now for the bloodier version, add some more red and burgundy around the edges to give it a 'just got hit' look,

For the building black eye just use the red left over on your brush and kind of 'contour' around the eye area to make it look swollen, odd to explain, but do it and you'll know haha.

If you have a wire sponge use it to create broken capillaries from the impact of the hit, use burgundy for this. If you don't have a wire sponge use a really prickly brush like I did.

Now, the blood, play around with it, just don't add an overdramatic amount of it!
When you apply blood, think of gravity, you can’t have someone lay down as they bleed but their blood flowing vertically down their face as if they were sitting down! If the person lays down make sure the blood leaks down onto the side the persons laying at! If the person sits up have the blood leak vertically.

Your face is done, just add a costume and you’re good to go!

Our First Video - The Suicide Squad, Joker Makeup Tutorial

Here we are, finally, with our first ever video for our channel!

So this look isn't too complicated, and as the title says we went for a nice and easy Joker makeup.

So the product list is simple,

Hair Gel
Kryolan Aqua Color Palette, shade green
Pritt stick
Baby Powder
Water
Kryolan Supracolor Palette shade clown white
Bourjois Liner Feutre eyeliner pen
Kryolan Supracolor Palette, shade 082
Inglot eyeshadow in shade 420
Inglot eyeshadow in shade r129, 391, 55
Kryolan Supracolor, shade 017 (colour correction of brows.

As seen in the video, I gelled the hair back like the Joker did.

To give the hair a green tint I used a green Aqua, this is completely safe as it's water based so it comes right off with a bit of water! So no worries, you wont be stuck with green hair forever. Unless you're blonde, I'm not sure if I'd recommend this. I haven't tried this on blonde hair, but if you're daring then go ahead, just remember I warned you! I suppose the gel can act as a barrier but...

I then started to block out the brows. For this I used the great old pritt stick and baby powder technique. But fear not! I will be showing you other methods of eyebrow blocking if this one doesn't suit you.

So it's simple, you put on a layer of mushed up Pritt Stick on the brow using your spatula, apply a good amount of pressure so you know that the hairs stick down. You could use your fingers but I personally prefer a spatula. Wait a few seconds for the glue to dry down a bit so the glue doesn't mix with powder, because if it does you'll end up with clumps of 'glueypowder'. Then powder the crap out of the layers of glue you applied.
The minimum layers are three, so do that and if you're still not happy with the texture of the brow add more layers.

Then colour correct the brows, this is done to neutralize the area and if white is applied the darkness of the brows doesn't come through. Powder your colour correction heavily, you don't want it transferring! For this I used Supracolor in 017.

Add your clown white all over the face, neck and ears. Powder that too, Supra is tricky to work with, it transfers and slides if it isn't set well.

We want to avoid that! So use your baby powder and bake!

Then I moved onto the contour. Always use a cool toned shade to contour, if not it looks orange and very unnatural! I used Inglot shadow in 420, it's a lovely cool toned eyeshadow but personally I use it for contour myself.
So contour the cheekbones, sides of the forehead and temples. Look at the Joker photos for bone structure reference! I did.

Then add some scratches and cuts. Jared didn't have any wax or prosthetic for the cuts, just a bit of face paint! So I probably wouldn't go all out for that! Just stick to paints. I used my beloved Supra palette.

The eyes don't have to be all neat and uniform, after all he is a bit loopy looking. Make the eyes look crazy! Make them look like black eyes! I used purples, I show you how I applied it in the video, so make sure to check it out!
The shadows I used are in the product list!

Then comes the fun part! Tattoos!
Use a felt tip liner pen, or just a simple eyeliner gel. Just make sure to powder!
Again, look closely at photos of the Joker for reference.

The lips were done using my beloved Supra, make sure to add the Joker famous upward curve of the mouth!

Optional, but you can add some of the neck and chest tattoos and you're finished!

Add a costume and you're ready!

Introduction to SFX Effects Makeup

Well hello there!

So you stumbled upon this blog and are probably looking around, wondering what it actually is about since there are no other posts except this one...

Well this post will explain everything you'll need to know about SFX Effects Makeup!

SFX Effects Makeup started out on April 1st, 2017.
I was catching my train after college when I got the message 'I want to do this YouTube channel with you.' from James and from then on we worked on this project ever since, and even though really it's only been 8 days, it's been a long 8 days of planning out videos, setting up social media accounts and getting it all out there.
We have thought about this channel for a long time, ever since we figured out that my talent in special effects makeup and James' talent in camera work and creating online content could actually have us doing something really exciting. And here we are, launching our YouTube channel and our first video this week!

So a little something about the two of us.

James who claims to be 'Charismatic' is a Digital Media and Society student, and does a pretty decent job with his camera. Also a master of Photoshop while I personally struggle with 'Paint' myself, as well as editing videos. Which makes my job easier. My name is Weronika and I'm a makeup artist. I've worked on a few movie sets, Photoshoots and YouTube channels. Other than SFX makeup I do beauty makeup and editorial work.

You can find out more about each of us in the About Us section at the top of the blog.

So this is it for today, I didn't want to give too much away yet ;) You will have to wait a bit for perhaps a video that will tell you more about us!

Thank you for visiting our blog and hopefully we'll see you here more often and that you like our work!
Oh, and don't forget to subscribe to our channel, just click this link HERE and like our Facebook page at this link right HERE.
